Reverb10 Prompt: Writing. What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it? via Leo Babauta
Time for a bit of honesty – I scoffed at this prompt when I first read it two days ago. I thought, rather arrogantly, this question is aimed at those who are only writers. I do so much more than write. I design. I run a business. (Cue self-important music.)
Then, I categorically dismissed the prompt. For a few hours.
But, it came creeping back into my consciousness. And I recognized my first response for what it was. Resistance. Major resistance. Avoidance.
Let’s be honest, this question could easily be for any occupation. It essentially asks, what are you doing that doesn’t contribute to your work? Can you eliminate those things?
Answering this prompt will take real work. An exacting analysis of the way I work. My habits. My schedule. Candidness about the diversions, distractions and deviations I take.
I didn’t want to do the work, so instead of receiving the prompt in the spirit in which it was offered, I stonewalled it.
Except, now I’m haunted by the question. I find it surfacing in those liminal moments before I fall asleep. I hear it bouncing around in my head.
So, I suppose I have no choice but to do the work and answer the question. Thanks a lot, Leo Babauta!
